Jamie Causey’s Curious Mind Has Helped Her Grow
Excerpt from Dallas Voyage Magazine August 31, 2020
At 36, while seven months pregnant with my youngest child, I finished cosmetology school and got licensed right in time to move to the other side of the country. I was fortunate to meet so many talented and passionate stylists while living in Washington. I learned a LOT from them.
Moving to Texas, when my husband retired, I started scouting salons in the Fort Worth area and noticed I followed several people who worked out of Panther City Salon, so I reached out and it all came together.
Probably the biggest hurdle I’ve handled professionally has been the decision I made to have a prophylactic double mastectomy. My mother was diagnosed with cancer in November of 2017, and it made me evaluate my own risk. My family history was significant enough that in August of 2018, I had the mastectomy, which was the first of EIGHT surgeries over the next 16 months, including a hysterectomy and a handful of reconstruction/revision surgeries.
Our move to Texas meant acquiring licensing in another state and building a clientele here. It’s been a challenge, but I’ve enjoyed it. Nothing will test your merit like jumping straight into the unknown and making it work for you.
My specialty is luxury blonding services, hence the name Babylights & Balayage. I also love color corrections. They’re like puzzles and they force me to work with the tools creatively to get a goal I and my client both love.
I’m most proud of my ability to land in new and unfamiliar settings where I’m a complete unknown and still manage to create solid relationships with my clients and my colleagues. I attribute that to authenticity and transparency.
I believe in cheering success. I’m not here to compete with anyone. I want to see success in our own measure across the board. Over the years, I’ve learned that some people aren’t going to love me, even if my work is immaculate. I’ve learned not to take that personally and to appreciate them finding the fit that makes them happy. I want women, especially to support one another as they succeed, and I LOVE seeing my colleagues do amazing things with their careers. Oh. And glitter. It just kind of turns up around me.
I have a very curious nature. I research things. A lot. I’m constantly watching and learning and reading. Curious minds are *always* looking for new information and challenges, so they’re always working to grow.
